Wiley and Nancy's Story

Wiley Stringfellow was born in Richmond County, NC to unknown parents circa 1796. At some point in the early 1800's Wiley and his family moved to Barnwell County South Carolina. (Note the exact location may now be located in Aiken County SC, as Aiken County was partially created from areas of Barnwell County in 1871 [source-JS])

Wiley received a 1000 acre land grant from the state along side the land of Henry Stringfellow. The land grants were issued by the State Of South Carolina, sign by the Governor and Commander in Chief in Columbia S.C. on May 3rd 1819 and certified by the Surveyor General on 19 April 1819 for Wiley, For Henry his was signed on the January 3rd 1819, they were both on Boggy Gut land and side by side. [source-GTS]The land was of little value as it was mostly swamp land. However, some 150 years later, the United States Government bought huge tracts of this land to build the infamous Savannah River Nuclear Testing Site. Most of the towns, farms, cemeteries and lives of these residents were bulldozed over. It is believed that all the gravesites were moved however. (This is an issue in finding the missing gravesite of the mysterious Henry)

The fact that Henry and Wiley owned land next door to each other in this area makes many of us Stringfellow cousins alive now and fascinated by genealogy believe that Henry was Wiley's father. We have no legal proof at this point, and are stuck with cutting off the family tree at this point until other facts surface.

Wiley Stringfellow married Nancy A. Youngblood. Nancy was born circa 1800 in North Carolina. No marriage license has been found. We do not know who her parents were and know little of her life except for what is mentioned in legal documents, and church records listed below. Nancy gave Henry 8 children between the years of 1818 and 1836. Their children were Eli Stringfellow, Henry Stringfellow, Mary Ann Stringfellow, Martha Ann Stringfellow, Darling T. Stringfellow, James Stringfellow, Elizabeth Stringfellow, and Wiley P. Stringfellow.

Between the years of 1831 and 1833, the couple moved to a farm in Talbot County, Georgia, where the family would live for the next 40 years. In the 1860's their two sons Wiley Jr. and Darling would go off to fight in the Civil War. Wiley died in 1870, at about the age of 76. Nancy outlived Wiley, but we are not sure how long. We have no record of her death. Our family is still looking for the graves of Wiley and Nancy.
